When to Fell a Tree: Making the Difficult Decision

No one wants to cut down a healthy tree. Trees add value, beauty, and shade to a property, and they take decades to replace. But there comes a point where felling is the only responsible decision — for safety, for property integrity, or for the health of the surrounding garden. The key is knowing when that point has been reached.

Structural Failure

The most compelling reason to fell a tree is structural compromise. Large cracks in the trunk, a pronounced lean that has developed recently, heaving soil at the base, or a hollow sounding trunk are all indicators that the tree is failing from the inside out. A tree in structural failure is a ticking bomb — and on the Highveld, it's not a question of if the next storm will bring it down, but when.

Disease and Decay

Fungal fruiting bodies (mushrooms) on the trunk or root flare are a sign of internal decay. While some trees can compartmentalise decay and remain standing for years, others become structurally unsound. A professional risk assessment can determine the extent of decay and whether the tree can be saved or must be removed.

Property Damage

Sometimes a healthy tree simply outgrows its space. Roots lifting foundations, driveways, or boundary walls, branches in constant conflict with roof structures, or a canopy that completely blocks solar panel efficiency — these are situations where the tree may be healthy but is causing damage that will only worsen with time.

When Not to Fell

Before deciding to fell, consider the alternatives. Crown reduction can solve the problem of a tree that's too large for its space. Deadwood removal eliminates the hazard of falling branches without losing the tree. Cabling and bracing can support structurally weak unions. And sometimes, a tree that looks dead is simply dormant — always get a professional opinion before making the cut.

The Bottom Line

If you're unsure, get an assessment. A qualified arborist can tell you whether your tree is a hazard, a nuisance, or perfectly healthy — and recommend the least invasive solution that keeps your property safe. Call us on 084 690 1545 for a no-obligation site visit.
